The people behind every lesson.

DB Prep Academy is small on purpose. The people who set its direction, write its curriculum, and organize its students are the same people a family talks to.

Portrait of Jin Young Seung
Principal

Jin Young Seung

Leads the academy, and is still the person who answers when a family asks what we stand for.

Jin Young leads DB Prep Academy with a single conviction: that a student learns fastest when one teacher watches one student work, in real time, and corrects a mistake in the second it happens. The academy began in Los Angeles in 2020 as a handful of one-to-one coding lessons; today its students medal at ACSL, USACO, and the Genius Olympiad every season.

As Principal, Jin Young sets the direction of the academy and holds every program to the standard it started with. That includes the proprietary lesson platform the academy built for itself — the shared whiteboard, the code graders, the parent portal — because the right tool did not exist, and a student should not have to wait for one.

Jin Young's view is simple: the numbers on the results page are not the goal. They are the evidence that the teaching worked.

“Six years in, the question is still the same: did this student actually understand it today?”

Portrait of Jae Young Seung
Director of Education

Jae Young Seung

Designs what is taught, in what order, and how we know it landed.

Jae Young owns the curriculum: the Algebra 1 through AP Calculus BC sequence, the Python-to-USACO coding pathway, and the week-by-week module plans behind every course on this site. Each pathway is built backward from a destination — an AP score, a competition division, a college major — so that no lesson is taught without knowing why it comes next.

The role also sets how the academy teaches. Teachers are hired against a rigorous bar of at least two years of proven classroom experience, then trained to the academy's method: live correction over recorded lectures, mastery over coverage, and homework assembled from what each student actually missed rather than a worksheet handed to everyone.

When a family asks which course their child should take in eleventh grade, Jae Young is the person who has already mapped the answer.

“A good curriculum is a promise about the order things will make sense in.”

Portrait of Via Alam
Student Organizer

Via Alam

The first voice a family hears, and the one that keeps every lesson on track.

Via is the coordinator behind every student's week. From the first inquiry to the first lesson, Via handles placement, scheduling across time zones, and onboarding onto the learning platform — so that by the time a student meets their teacher, everything around the lesson already works.

Between lessons, Via is the bridge between teacher and home: tracking attendance and progress, making sure post-class feedback reaches parents, and flagging early when a student needs a change of pace, a different course, or simply a conversation. Every student at DB Prep Academy has a coordinator who knows where they stand, and for many of them that coordinator is Via.

Families describe Via the same way: organized, quick to respond, and genuinely invested in how their child is doing.

“Parents should never have to wonder what happened in class. That is my job.”
